Concurrently or after this, there was the exciting world of international superheroes to dive into- Spiderman, the Justice League of America, Xmen, etc. Eager minds read all of these comics during lazy summer afternoons.
Finally, there were the manga comics – Japanese graphic novels based on a 19th-century ancient Japanese art. Uzumaki Naruto, Goku, etc. are still favorite beloved characters.
If anyone who has caught the fever of one or all of these comic book forms, they know it’s not the kind to be forgotten easily. Comics carry the scent of childhood and even coming-of-age. And while they might not be bought as enthusiastically now as they were once, the old copies are still treasured and cherished.
Which means – you’ve got to take care of them and store them properly, so they withstand the punches of the villain called time. Below are a few tips to get started with comic storage:
Get comic book bags
There are three types of comic book bags, depending on the year of publication:
Current – 1980s to today, size 6 7/8″ x 10 1/2″
Silver Age – 1950s to 1980s, size 7 1/8″ x 10 1/2″
Golden Age – pre-1950, size 7 3/4″ x 10 1/2″
Depending on which era your comic book belonged to, you can get the appropriate book bag for it.
Get comic book boards
Cardboard’ boards’ are used as backing to keep comics crease-free. Always go for acid-free cardboard to prevent damage to the pages.
Get hard-shell cases
These cost more than getting a book bag and a book board but provides much higher protection. These are hard plastic holders and prevent creasing and bending of the pages. The case can also set up on the wall for display. Ideal, if you want to display your collection proudly.
Get comic storage boxes
Another popular method of storing comic books is by placing them upright in comic storage boxes. These boxes come in 2 sizes- long and short. For a bit more extra money, you can also buy plastic boxes that offer more protection than your regular cardboard boxes.
However, be careful not to stack too many boxes on top of one. 3 or 5 should be the maximum number.
All of the above options will protect your comic books from the elements and pests like silverfish and bookworms. However, there are a few things that are a big no-no. They go as follows:
What to NOT do
- Don’t roll up your comics and keep them in your back pocket.
- No smoking around comics which are out of the bag. It will yellow the pages.
- No eating or drinking while reading your comic lest something spills on the page and stains it.
- Don’t stack the comics. The pressure from the top books can damage the bottom ones.
- Don’t leave the comics out in the sun. Prolonged exposure can damage the pages.
- Never place the comics or the containers in which they are kept in, on the floor. Always place them on racks or pallets, this will ward off any potential water damage due to leaking.
The best course of action
After you have chosen your preferred container – bag, shell, board, or box – drop it off at a self-storage facility, like Self Storage India. You won’t need to worry about the ‘what not to dos,’ at all since they’ll automatically be taken care of at the storage warehouse. A personal self storage facility rental provides comfort, security, and peace of mind.
If you follow the above pointers, you can be sure that your precious comic collection will stay damage-free and golden for your grey-haired self and the future generations to enjoy.
