Before storing a scooter or EV two-wheeler, follow your owner's manual on battery charge and storage, fill tyres to the right pressure and use the centre stand. Wash and dry it, empty the boot and use a breathable cover. Keep the registration, insurance and spare key with you, and note any renewals due while it's parked.

A scooter or EV two-wheeler left standing for months can come back with a flat battery, soft tyres and a seat full of dust. Whether you're travelling, moving cities for a while or just not riding through the monsoon, a bit of preparation makes it much easier to start riding again.

This guide covers battery and tyre care, cleaning and covering, and the papers to keep ready, for both petrol scooters and electric two-wheelers.

How do you look after the battery?

VehicleWhat to do
EV scooter or bikeFollow the charge level and storage advice in your owner's manual. Many makers advise against storing a battery fully drained.
Removable EV batteryAsk the maker or dealer how and where to store it, and keep it away from heat and damp.
Petrol scooterAsk your mechanic whether to disconnect the battery or use a trickle charger for a long break.

If you aren't sure, ask your dealer or service centre before a long break. Battery advice varies by model.

How do you protect the tyres?

  • Fill tyres to the pressure in your owner's manual before parking.
  • Use the centre stand where possible, so the weight isn't on one spot of the tyre.
  • Check the pressure again before your first ride.

How do you clean and cover it?

  1. Wash and dry the vehicle fully, including under the seat.
  2. Remove anything from the boot or storage box.
  3. Use a breathable cover, not a plastic sheet, which traps moisture.
  4. Park away from direct sun and standing water.

For monsoon care, see protecting stored belongings from monsoon damp.

Which papers should you keep ready?

  • Registration certificate
  • Insurance policy, with the renewal date noted
  • Pollution certificate, if your vehicle needs one
  • Service book and spare key

Keep originals with you, not in the vehicle. Set reminders for any renewals that fall due while it's parked.

When do people put a scooter away for a while?

Two-wheelers are often left unused for weeks or months: during a posting to another city, a long trip abroad, a medical recovery, or simply when the family switches to a car. A scooter that sits without preparation can come back with a flat or damaged battery, flat-spotted tyres, rust and pests in the seat storage. A little preparation avoids most of this, whether the scooter is kept in your society parking, a garage or elsewhere.

How does preparing an EV differ from a petrol scooter?

AreaElectric scooterPetrol scooter
BatteryFollow the maker's advice on the charge level for storage; many suggest a partial charge rather than full or emptyDisconnect the 12V battery or use a maintainer, as the maker advises

The owner's manual is the most reliable guide for your model, since battery chemistry and settings vary between makers.

What else helps the battery last?

  • Avoid extreme heat. Park in shade and away from direct sun, especially through Delhi NCR summers.
  • Use the maker's charger. Third-party chargers may not suit the battery.
  • Don't leave it at zero. A fully drained lithium battery may be hard to recover.
  • Check for swelling, smell or damage before and after storage, and contact the service centre if you notice anything.
  • Removable batteries: some models let you take the battery indoors. Follow the maker's guidance on where and how to keep it.

How do you protect the body, seat and electronics?

  1. Wash and dry fully. Clean off mud and road grime, then dry every part, including under the seat.
  2. Empty the seat storage. Remove helmets, rain gear, papers and any food wrappers.
  3. Protect metal parts. A light coat of a suitable protectant on exposed metal can help prevent rust; ask your service centre what suits your scooter.
  4. Use a breathable cover. A cover that lets moisture escape is better than a plastic sheet, which can trap condensation.
  5. Keep pests out. Check that no gaps are inviting rodents, which can chew wiring.
  6. Lock it. Use the steering lock and, if parked outdoors, a disc lock or chain.

What paperwork should you check before a long gap?

  • Registration certificate (RC) is valid and kept safely at home.
  • Insurance is active. Ask your insurer about cover while the vehicle is not in use; don't let it lapse without checking the rules.
  • PUC certificate for petrol scooters, which you'll need when you ride again.
  • Service book and warranty card for EVs, since battery warranties may have conditions.

How do you bring the scooter back into use?

  1. Check tyre pressure and look for cracks or flat spots.
  2. Check the battery charge and charge fully before the first ride, following the maker's guidance.
  3. Test brakes, lights, horn and indicators.
  4. Look under the seat and around wiring for signs of pests.
  5. Book a service if it's been a long gap.
  6. Ride slowly at first to check everything works smoothly.

What are common mistakes?

  • Leaving an EV battery fully drained or fully charged for months, against the maker's advice.
  • Parking in direct sun for long periods.
  • Using a non-breathable plastic cover.
  • Letting insurance lapse without checking the rules.
  • Leaving helmets and papers in the seat storage.
  • Forgetting to check tyre pressure before riding again.

How should helmets and riding gear be stored?

  • Helmets: wipe the shell, wash or air the liner as the maker allows, and dry fully. Store in a cloth bag on a shelf, not hanging from the mirror.
  • Riding jackets and gloves: wash or wipe according to the label, dry fully in shade and store in a breathable bag.
  • Rain gear: dry completely before folding, or it can smell and develop mildew.
  • Chargers and cables: coil loosely, label and keep them dry indoors.
  • Spare keys: keep at home with the vehicle papers.

What about society parking?

If the scooter stays in your society while you're away, tell the facility office or security how long it will be parked, and ask about any rules for unused vehicles. Some societies have rules about charging EVs in common areas, so check before leaving a charger connected. Ask a family member or neighbour to check on the scooter if you'll be away for a long time.

Can you keep a two-wheeler in storage?

Self Storage India offers bike storage. Our storage rules say vehicles must be registered, insured and in working order, and flammables aren't allowed. Ask our team how to prepare a petrol scooter's fuel before drop-off, and which facility suits you: Noida, Delhi or Gurugram.
