Most monsoon damage in storage starts with belongings that were packed damp or left touching the floor and walls. To protect stored things in Delhi NCR's monsoon: dry everything fully before packing, use sturdy cartons or plastic boxes, raise items off the floor, and leave gaps for air. Use silica gel or moisture absorbers in closed boxes. If you can, visit once during the rains to check.
Anyone who has opened a trunk of clothes after a Delhi monsoon knows the smell. Damp gets into fabric, wood, paper and leather slowly, and you usually don't notice until the damage is done. A storage room cuts down a lot of that risk. How you pack still matters most.
Why is the monsoon hard on stored belongings?
During the monsoon months the air in Delhi NCR stays humid for long stretches. Materials such as cotton, wood, paper and leather absorb moisture from the air. When things stay damp and there's little airflow, mould and mildew can grow. Metal can rust and wood can swell or warp. Moisture trapped inside a sealed bag or a cardboard carton has nowhere to go.
What should you do before packing?
- Dry everything completely. Wash clothes and linen, then dry them fully in the sun before folding. Don't pack on a wet, cloudy day if you can avoid it.
- Clean surfaces. Wipe furniture and appliances. Dust and food traces hold moisture and attract insects.
- Empty and dry appliances. Defrost the fridge, drain the washing machine and cooler, and leave doors slightly open in storage.
- Treat leather and wood as the maker advises, and let them air out before wrapping.
Which containers hold up better in damp weather?
| Container | In the monsoon | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic boxes with lids | Keep out damp and insects well | Only pack fully dry items, and add a silica gel pack |
| New corrugated cartons | Fine if kept off the floor | Avoid old or soft cartons, which weaken in damp |
| Vacuum bags | Good for dry bedding and clothes | Not for leather, silk or anything that needs to breathe |
| Metal trunks | Strong but can rust | Line with clean cloth and keep off the floor |

How do you protect specific items?
Clothes and linen
Store them clean and sun-dried. Add naphthalene balls or neem leaves wrapped in cloth if you use them, kept away from direct contact with fabric. Keep silk and wool in cotton covers rather than plastic. Our post on storing winter clothes has more.
Wooden furniture
Wrap it in breathable covers or old sheets, not tightly sealed plastic. Keep it slightly away from walls. See tips to preserve furniture in storage.
Books and documents
Pack books upright or flat in small, sturdy boxes with silica gel. Keep important papers in zip-lock bags or document folders inside a plastic box.
Electronics
Remove batteries, pack devices in their original boxes or padded cartons, and add silica gel. Our electronics storage guide goes step by step.
Mattresses and upholstery
Make sure they're completely dry before covering them. Lay mattresses flat on a raised base for long storage. More in how to store a mattress.
How should the storage room be arranged?
- Raise everything off the floor with pallets, planks or the bed base.
- Leave a small gap from the walls so air can move.
- Don't pack the room solid. Leave a path down the middle so you can reach things and check them.
- Heavy and sturdy items at the bottom, fabrics and paper higher up.
- Keep a list of what's in each box, so a check doesn't mean unpacking everything.
What should you check during the rains?
If you can, visit once midway through the monsoon. Open a few boxes of clothes or papers and check for any smell or spots. Replace moisture absorbers that are full. If something has got damp, take it home and dry it in the sun before it spreads to the rest. If you're abroad or busy, ask a family member to do this for you.
