To store a carpet or rug, vacuum both sides, get valuable rugs cleaned professionally, and make sure it's fully dry. Roll it rather than fold it, tie it loosely and wrap it in breathable cloth, not plastic. Lay it flat, raised off the floor, with nothing heavy on top, and check it every few months.

A hand-knotted carpet, a dhurrie or a large living-room rug can be damaged in storage by moths, damp and crushing. Folding a rug can crease or crack its backing, and storing it dirty can attract insects. Cleaning, rolling and wrapping it properly prevents most of these problems.

This guide covers how to clean, roll, wrap and place carpets and rugs so they come out of storage in good shape.

How should carpets be cleaned before storage?

  • Vacuum both sides to remove dust, food bits and insect eggs.
  • Get valuable, hand-knotted or silk rugs cleaned professionally.
  • Make sure the rug is fully dry before rolling it. Damp rugs can grow mould.
  • Check the edges and back for moth damage, and treat it before storage.

Should you roll or fold a rug?

DoAvoid
Roll the rug, usually with the pile facing inwardFolding, which can crease or crack the backing
Roll it around a tube or pole for supportRolling it so tightly that the fibres are crushed
Tie it loosely with cotton tape or stringTight ropes that leave marks
Wrap it in a cotton sheet or breathable clothSealing it in plastic for long periods

Some delicate or antique rugs need special handling, so check the maker's or cleaner's advice.

How do you protect stored rugs from moths and damp?

  1. Store only clean, fully dry rugs.
  2. If you use moth repellents, keep them from touching the fibres directly.
  3. Keep rugs off the floor and away from damp walls.
  4. Unroll and check long-stored rugs every few months, and air them.

For damp-season advice, see protecting stored belongings from monsoon damp.

How should rugs be placed in the unit?

Lay rolled rugs flat on a shelf or on top of sturdy furniture, raised off the floor. Don't stand them on end for long periods, and don't put heavy boxes on top of them. Label each roll with its size and which room it belongs to. Our guide on stacking things inside a storage unit has more tips.

Do different carpets and rugs need different care?

TypeWhat to watch forStorage tip
Hand-knotted wool (for example Kashmiri or Bhadohi rugs)Moths, and damp that can cause mildewClean, dry fully, roll pile-in or as your carpet cleaner advises, wrap in breathable cloth
Silk rugsFragile fibres; colours can bleed if dampGet specialist cleaning advice; keep very dry and away from light
Dhurries and flat-weavesFolds can leave lasting creasesRoll rather than fold; they're lighter so they can sit on a shelf
Synthetic machine-made carpetsLess prone to moths, but can hold dust and smellsVacuum both sides, dry fully, roll and wrap
Jute and natural-fibre matsAbsorb moisture; can mould or rotStore only when bone dry, off the floor, with air around them

How do you prepare a carpet before storage?

  1. Vacuum both sides. Dust and food crumbs attract insects.
  2. Clean as needed. For valuable or handmade rugs, use a professional carpet cleaner who knows the fibre.
  3. Dry completely. Dry in shade and check the backing, not just the surface. A damp carpet rolled up can develop mildew quickly.
  4. Check for damage. Note loose fringes or worn areas, and photograph the carpet.
  5. Measure and label. Write the size and room it came from on a tag, so you know which roll is which.

What should you wrap a carpet in?

  • Use: clean cotton sheets, muslin or breathable carpet bags.
  • Avoid: sealing in plastic for long periods. Plastic can trap moisture and lead to mildew.
  • Tie loosely with cotton tape or cloth strips, not tight ropes that leave marks.
  • For long rolls, rolling around a sturdy tube or pipe wrapped in cloth helps keep the roll even.

What shouldn't you do?

  • Don't fold large carpets for long periods; folds can crack the backing.
  • Don't stand rolls on end for months, which can crush one side.
  • Don't stack heavy boxes or furniture on top of rolled carpets.
  • Don't use strong chemicals on handmade rugs without advice.
  • Don't store a carpet that smells musty; dry and air it first.

How do you protect carpets in the monsoon?

Humid months in Delhi NCR are the riskiest time for stored carpets. Keep rolls off the floor on pallets or planks, a little away from walls, and add silica gel sachets inside the wrapping (not touching the pile). If you can, check the carpets after the monsoon and air them in shade on a dry day.

How do you bring a carpet back into use?

  1. Unroll in a clean, dry space.
  2. Check for moth damage, marks or smells.
  3. Air it in shade for a few hours.
  4. Vacuum gently and let the pile settle for a day or two.
  5. Use a rug pad underneath to protect the carpet and the floor.

What are common mistakes?

  • Rolling a carpet that is still slightly damp from cleaning.
  • Storing in a garage or on a terrace without checking for damp.
  • Leaving carpets in sealed plastic for years.
  • Skipping a moth check on wool and silk rugs.
  • Not labelling rolls, then unrolling them all to find one.

Which carpets are worth storing?

Before storing, decide whether each carpet will be used again. Handmade rugs, family pieces and good-quality carpets that suit your next home are usually worth keeping. Worn synthetic carpets, or ones that won't fit any room you're planning, may cost more to clean and store than to replace. Measuring each carpet and noting where it could go in your next home helps you decide.

How much space do rolled carpets take?

A rolled carpet takes up floor length roughly equal to its width, and needs to lie flat. Long rolls sit well along a side wall of the unit, on pallets or planks, with lighter boxes on a shelf above rather than on top of the roll. Several smaller rugs can be rolled and laid side by side. Use the storage calculator to estimate the space for your carpets along with other household goods.

How should carpets be moved?

Carry rolled carpets with two people, one at each end, so the roll doesn't bend in the middle. Don't drag a carpet across the floor, which can damage the backing and fringes. Partner pickup, packing and transport are available across Delhi NCR at an additional cost if you'd rather not move heavy rolls yourself.

When does a storage unit help?

A unit helps when you're between homes, renovating, or swapping rugs between seasons. Our units are private, lockable rooms with 24/7 CCTV and regular pest control, on flexible monthly plans with no lock-in.
