Keep oil, ghee, camphor, incense and matchboxes out of storage, since flammables aren’t allowed, and don’t store flowers, sweets or prasad. Clean and dry idols and articles, wrap each in soft cloth and padding, and pack them in a separate labelled box. Self Storage India offers private, lockable rooms with 24/7 CCTV, regular pest control and monthly plans with no lock-in.

When you move, renovate or make room at home, puja items and idols need careful handling. Many families prefer to keep them with them, but extra idols, festival-only items and spare brass or silver articles can be stored with care until they're needed. This guide covers how to clean, wrap and pack them respectfully.

What puja items shouldn't go into storage?

Flammables aren't allowed in our facilities. Keep oil, ghee, camphor, incense sticks, dhoop and matchboxes out of storage. Perishables such as flowers, sweets and prasad aren't allowed either. Use them up or keep them at home. See what can and can't be stored.

How should you prepare puja items for storage?

Clean each item gently and let it dry fully. Remove any oil or ghee residue from diyas and lamps, since residue can attract pests and leave stains. If your family follows a particular practice before moving idols, follow it.

How should you pack each item?

ItemHow to pack it
Idols and murtisWrap in a soft clean cloth, then bubble wrap; pack upright in a padded box
Brass and silver articlesClean, dry fully and wrap each piece separately in cloth
Diyas and lampsRemove all oil residue, dry and wrap
Frames and picturesWrap in cloth and pack flat or upright with padding
Puja cloths and asansWash, dry and fold into a sealed bag
Religious booksWrap in cloth and pack flat in a sealed carton

How do you keep them safe in the unit?

  1. Use a separate, clearly labelled box for puja items.
  2. Mark fragile boxes and keep them on top, never under heavy cartons.
  3. Keep boxes off the floor and leave a gap from the walls.
  4. Place them where you can reach them easily. See arranging a storage unit.
  5. Keep a list of what's stored. Use our inventory list template.

Valuable silver and gold items need thought: jewellery and priceless items are discouraged in storage. For fragile packing, read how to pack crockery.

When do families need to store puja items?

Puja items are usually kept at home, in the mandir or puja room. But there are times when some of them need to be packed away:

  • Moving house, when the mandir is taken down and set up again in the new home.
  • Renovation or repainting of the puja room or nearby walls. See storage during waterproofing and repainting.
  • Festival items used once a year, such as Ganesh Chaturthi or Durga Puja decorations, Diwali lamps or a large kalash set.
  • Inherited items from grandparents' homes, which the family hasn't yet decided how to place. See storage for inherited belongings.
  • Going abroad for a long period and closing up the home.

Many families prefer to keep the main idols and daily puja items at home and store only occasional or festival items. Follow your family's customs on what to move and when.

How should items of different materials be packed?

How do you pack a home mandir?

  1. Remove all items from the mandir, following your family's customs for doing so.
  2. Clean the mandir and let it dry fully.
  3. Remove lights and wiring if fitted, and coil cables with a label.
  4. Dismantle if designed to, photographing how parts fit and bagging any screws.
  5. Wrap carved or delicate parts separately with extra padding.
  6. Wrap the main body in a blanket or pad, then stretch wrap over the pad.
  7. Mark it FRAGILE and THIS WAY UP.

Glass doors and marble panels should be stored on their edge, padded on both sides, with nothing heavy on top.

How should idols be handled?

  • Handle idols with clean, dry hands, holding them by the base rather than by arms or crowns.
  • Wrap each idol individually in clean cotton cloth, then bubble wrap.
  • Pack idols upright in their own boxes, with padding all around so they can't move.
  • Label each box clearly, so it can be unpacked with care.
  • Many families prefer to carry the main idols with them during a move rather than sending them with other goods.

How should festival decorations be stored?

Decorations for Diwali, Navratri, Ganesh Chaturthi and other festivals are often reused each year. Store each festival's items in their own labelled box: lights coiled and tested, torans and hangings folded, and rangoli stencils flat. Keep diyas wrapped individually. Remove all candles, wax, oil, camphor and incense before storing, since flammables can't go into storage. See festival decoration storage for more.

How do you set up again after storage?

  1. Unpack puja items in a clean room, at a time that suits your family's customs.
  2. Check each item against your list.
  3. Clean metal items, which may have tarnished slightly.
  4. Wash fabrics before use.
  5. Reassemble the mandir using your photos.
  6. Buy fresh oil, ghee, camphor, incense and flowers, since these weren't stored.

What are common mistakes when storing puja items?

  • Leaving oil, ghee or wax in diyas and lamps.
  • Packing camphor, incense, dhoop or matchboxes in the box. These are flammable and can't go into storage.
  • Storing dried flowers, sweets, prasad or other perishables.
  • Packing heavy brass items on top of delicate idols.
  • Storing silver or jewellery used in puja, which is discouraged.

How should religious books and scriptures be stored?

Many families keep religious texts such as the Gita, Ramayan, Gurbani gutkas, prayer books or family pothis, sometimes passed down for generations. Paper is sensitive to damp and pests, so these need care:

  • Wrap each book in a clean cloth, as many families already do.
  • Store books upright or flat in a sturdy box, not squeezed tightly.
  • Keep the box off the floor and away from walls.
  • Don't store books that are already damp or show signs of insects.
  • Follow your family's or community's customs on handling and placing sacred texts.

Very old or fragile texts are often better kept at home where you can check them. See how to store books long term.

Why keep a list of puja items?

Puja sets often have many small pieces: a thali, katoris, a bell, a diya, a kalash, small idols, cloths and stands. A short list, with a photo of the full set laid out, helps you check nothing is missing when you unpack, and makes setting up in a new home quicker. Our storage inventory template can be used for this.
