Before repainting or waterproofing, confirm the schedule, affected rooms and drying times. Move furniture away from walls and cover it, pack electronics, books and clothes, and take down paintings and mirrors. If the work runs for weeks or covers several rooms, a monthly storage unit can hold items until the walls are dry.

When your society repaints the building or does terrace and wall waterproofing, or you repaint your own flat, rooms need to be cleared. Paint, dust, damp walls and workers moving ladders around can all damage furniture, electronics and clothes. Planning what to move, where it goes and when it comes back makes the work easier for everyone.

This guide covers how to plan, what to protect, and when moving things into a storage unit makes sense.

How should you plan around the work?

  1. Ask the society or contractor for the schedule, and which walls or rooms are affected.
  2. Ask how long walls need to dry before furniture goes back against them.
  3. Decide which items stay (covered) and which move out.
  4. Book help or transport early if large items are moving.

What should stay and what should go?

ItemSuggestion
Sofas, beds, almirahs near affected wallsMove away from walls and cover, or move out
TVs, computers and speakersUnplug, pack and move away from dust
Books, clothes and linenBox and seal against dust and damp
Paintings and mirrorsTake down, wrap and store flat or upright
Rugs and carpetsRoll and move out of the work area
Kitchen items near work areasPack in closed boxes

See our guide on protecting belongings during a renovation.

How do you protect items that stay?

  • Cover furniture with sheets, and only use plastic for the duration of the work.
  • Remove plastic covers once the work ends, so moisture isn't trapped.
  • Keep valuables and documents locked away or with you.
  • Don't put furniture back against freshly waterproofed or painted walls until they're dry.

Why does waterproofing or repainting need so much clearing?

Waterproofing a terrace, bathroom or outer wall, and repainting a flat, are messy jobs. Workers need clear access to walls and floors, and the work can produce dust, chemical smells, paint splashes and sometimes leaks while old layers are removed. Furniture left close to walls gets in the way and can be damaged, and soft furnishings can absorb smells. Clearing rooms properly protects your belongings and lets the work finish faster.

What does each type of work affect?

Type of workRooms usually affectedWhat to clear
Terrace or roof waterproofingTop-floor rooms below the terraceFurniture near affected ceilings and walls, items stored on the terrace
Bathroom waterproofingBathroom and rooms next to itItems in the bathroom, and furniture against shared walls
External wall waterproofingRooms with outer wallsFurniture and wall hangings along those walls
Full repaintingEvery room being paintedWall hangings, curtains, most small items; move furniture to the centre or out
Seepage repairsThe affected wall and nearby roomsAnything that may already be damp, plus items near the work

What should you ask the contractor before work starts?

  • Which rooms and walls will be worked on, and in what order?
  • How long will each stage take, including curing and drying time?
  • Will the work create heavy dust, chemical smells or water on floors?
  • Do they cover furniture, and with what?
  • Will water or power need to be switched off at any point?
  • When can each room be used again?

Get the answers in writing if you can, and plan storage around the longest likely timeline, since work often runs over.

What should you do if belongings are already damp?

Seepage often comes to light because of damp furniture, books or clothes. Before you store anything from an affected room:

  1. Move items away from the damp wall straight away.
  2. Dry clothes, linen and soft items fully in shade, and wash anything that smells musty.
  3. Wipe furniture and let it air dry; check the back and underside for mould or soft wood.
  4. Lay out damp books and papers to dry, or seek advice for valuable documents.
  5. Don't pack anything that's still damp. Moisture sealed in a box spreads to everything else.

When in the year should you plan this work?

Many homeowners in Delhi NCR schedule waterproofing before the monsoon, so leaks are fixed before the rains. Repainting is often planned before Diwali or a family function. These are busy periods for contractors, so book early and plan storage at the same time. Working in dry weather also helps paint and waterproofing layers cure properly.

What if you're a tenant or landlord?

  • Tenants: agree with your landlord on the work dates, which rooms are affected and who covers storage or moving costs.
  • Landlords: if the flat is between tenants, it's the easiest time for major work. If tenants are in, giving notice and offering help with clearing rooms makes things smoother.

How do you move things back in?

  1. Wait until paint and waterproofing have fully cured and the smell has cleared.
  2. Clean floors and wipe down shelves and cupboards.
  3. Check the repaired areas for any new damp before putting furniture back against them.
  4. Bring back furniture first, then boxes room by room.
  5. Keep a small gap between furniture and newly treated walls for a few weeks.

What are common mistakes during renovation storage?

  • Leaving furniture under plastic sheets in rooms being painted, where it can still get splashed or scratched.
  • Storing items that were already damp from seepage.
  • Underestimating how long the work will take.
  • Storing paint, thinners or waterproofing chemicals in a storage unit. These are flammable or hazardous and can't go into storage.
  • Not labelling boxes by room, making the move back harder.

Monthly plans with no lock-in mean you can extend if the work runs over. See arranging a storage unit for loading tips.

How should you pack in a hurry before work starts?

Contractors sometimes start sooner than expected. If you have only a day or two:

  1. Start with the rooms being worked on first.
  2. Pack fragile and valuable items yourself: glassware, electronics, framed photos and documents.
  3. Take down wall hangings, curtains and fixtures such as TV wall brackets, and bag the screws.
  4. Use simple labels: room name and a few words on contents.
  5. Keep important documents, jewellery and medicines with you, not in storage.
  6. Book pickup early. Partner pickup, packing and transport are available across Delhi NCR at an additional cost.

Can you store only part of the home?

Yes. Many families store just the furniture and boxes from the rooms being worked on and live in the rest of the home. If you only have a few cartons to move, box storage is priced per box. Use the storage calculator to estimate space for the rooms you're clearing.

When does a storage unit help?

A unit helps when the work runs for weeks, several rooms are affected, or there's no space to stack things at home. Our units are private, lockable rooms with 24/7 CCTV and regular pest control, on flexible monthly plans with no lock-in, so you can store things only while the work runs.

Partner pickup, packing and transport are available across Delhi NCR at an additional cost; see how to plan a pickup. Facilities are in Noida, Delhi and Gurugram. To estimate space, use the storage calculator, then click "Get Free Quote" for a callback.
