Pest control and fumigation work better when rooms are clear. Termite treatment needs access to walls and skirting, cockroach and bed bug treatments reach into cupboards and furniture, and many treatments ask you to keep food, clothes and children's things away from sprayed areas. Moving some belongings out for a few days or weeks makes the job easier and protects what you own. This guide covers what to move, how to check it first and how to bring it back.
Why clear rooms before pest control?
- Better reach. Treatment works on walls, corners, cracks and furniture joints. Crowded rooms leave gaps where pests survive.
- Less exposure. Clothes, bedding, toys and kitchen items are better kept away from chemicals.
- Less re-infestation. Clutter gives cockroaches, silverfish and rodents places to hide and breed.
- Easier cleaning afterwards. Clear floors and shelves are quicker to wipe and mop once treatment is done.
Always follow the instructions from your pest control company. They will tell you which rooms to clear, how long to stay out and when it is safe to return.
What should you move out, and what can stay?
| Item | Usual approach | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Clothes and bedding | Wash, dry and pack, or move out | Keep away from sprayed areas |
| Children's toys | Wash or wipe, then pack | Children often put toys in their mouths |
| Books and papers | Check for silverfish, then box | Shake out pages before packing |
| Wooden furniture | Ask the pest controller | Some pieces may need treatment themselves |
| Electronics | Cover or move out | Keep sprays and dust away from vents |
| Food and spices | Seal and keep at home, or use up | Food can't be stored in a unit |
| Medicines | Keep with you | Keep away from chemicals |
| Plants and pets | Move to a friend's or relative's place | Living things can't go into storage |
How do you make sure you don't carry pests into storage?
This is the most important step. Moving infested items into storage only moves the problem. Before packing anything:
- Inspect each item in good light. Look for droppings, eggs, shed skins, tiny holes in wood or fine powder under furniture.
- Wash fabrics on a hot cycle where the care label allows, and dry them fully in the sun.
- Vacuum furniture seams, cushions and drawer corners.
- Shake out books and boxes of papers.
- Use new or clean cartons. Old cardboard can carry cockroach eggs and attracts termites.
- Leave infested items behind so they can be treated, or ask the pest controller how to handle them.
If wooden furniture shows signs of termites, have it treated before it goes anywhere. Our termite prevention guide explains the signs.
How does the treatment type change your plan?
| Treatment | What usually needs clearing | Typical gap before return |
|---|---|---|
| Cockroach gel or spray | Kitchen cupboards and food areas | Ask your pest controller |
| Bed bug treatment | Beds, mattresses, sofas and linen | Often needs a follow-up visit |
| Termite treatment | Walls, skirting and wooden furniture | Ask your pest controller |
| Full-home fumigation | Most of the home | Usually the longest; follow their advice |
Times vary by product and company, so we haven't listed hours or days. Your pest controller's advice is the one to follow.
How do you prepare the kitchen for cockroach treatment?
The kitchen is where most cockroach treatments focus, so it usually needs the most clearing. Empty the cupboards under the sink and around the gas stove, since these warm, damp spots are where cockroaches gather. Pack spices, grains and snacks in sealed containers and keep them in a room that isn't being treated; food can't go into a storage unit. Spare crockery, cookware and small appliances you rarely use can be wiped, packed and moved out, which also gives the treatment clear shelves to work on. After treatment, wash everyday dishes before using them again.
What extra care do bed bugs need?
Bed bugs hide in mattress seams, bed frames, sofa joints, curtains and even suitcases, so they spread easily when belongings move. Be careful here. Wash and dry all bedding and clothes from affected rooms on the hottest setting the fabric allows, then seal them in clean bags straight away. Don't move mattresses, sofas or upholstered chairs out of an affected room unless your pest controller says they are clear. Moving them can carry bugs to a new place. Treatment often needs a second visit, so plan for items to stay out until after that visit.
How do you plan the days around treatment?
Book the treatment first, then work backwards. Start sorting and cleaning items two or three days before, so fabrics have time to dry fully. Arrange pickup or your own transport for the day before treatment, not the same morning, so rooms are clear when the team arrives. Tell household help and any neighbours who share walls, since some treatments affect nearby flats. Plan where your family will stay if you need to be out of the home. Keep a small bag with clothes, medicines and chargers with you.
How should you pack items for a short stay in storage?
- Pack clean, dry items only. Damp clothes can grow mould in a closed box.
- Use lidded plastic boxes or sealed cartons for fabrics and toys.
- Wrap furniture in clean blankets or pads, not old sheets that may hide eggs.
- Add silica gel to boxes during the monsoon.
- Label each box with the room it came from, so it goes back to the right place.
- Keep an inventory. See our inventory guide.
What can't go into storage at this time?
Leftover pest control chemicals, sprays, mosquito repellents with fuel and anything flammable can't be stored. Neither can food, plants or pets. Keep medicines and valuables such as jewellery and cash with you. See what can and cannot be stored.
How do you bring things back safely?
- Wait until the pest controller says the home is ready.
- Air out the rooms and clean floors and shelves as advised.
- Bring items back room by room, checking each box as you open it.
- Throw away old cartons rather than keeping them in the home.
- Note the date of treatment and any follow-up visit.
What about society-wide fumigation or repairs?
Some housing societies arrange building-wide pest control along with repainting or waterproofing. In that case, more of the flat may need clearing at once, and for longer. Our guide to storage during waterproofing and repainting covers that situation. If your family is moving in with relatives for a few days, see storage vs keeping goods at a relative's house.
How do you keep pests from coming back?
Once your belongings are home, a few habits keep the treatment working longer. Keep food sealed and the kitchen dry at night, fix dripping taps and seepage quickly, and don't let cardboard boxes pile up in balconies and lofts, since they give cockroaches and termites a home. Store clothes in clean, dry cupboards with neem leaves or cedar, and air out rarely used rooms. Keep a note of when the next treatment is due. Many families schedule it before the monsoon, when damp brings pests out.
