If a transfer takes you to smaller or not-yet-allotted accommodation, store your bulky furniture and appliances in Delhi NCR on a month-to-month plan and take only what you need every day. Store in the city you expect to return to. Number and photograph every box, name a trusted local contact, set up payments so they don't lapse, and keep your original documents with you.

A transfer order doesn't wait for a convenient time. Doctors moving between hospitals, defence families on a new posting, and government staff sent to another city often get a few weeks' notice. Sometimes they get less. The new post may come with a smaller quarter, a mess, hostel or shared accommodation, or a waiting list for housing. You may also be in a place you expect to leave again within a year or two.

That's when storing part of your household in Delhi NCR starts to make sense. This guide covers who it suits, what to store, how to plan around an uncertain return, and how to keep it simple from a distance.

Why do people on transfer postings use self storage?

SituationHow storage helps
The new accommodation is smaller than your current homeKeep the furniture that won't fit, instead of selling it and buying again later
Housing at the new station isn't allotted yetStore everything, live light in temporary accommodation, and move in once it's allotted
A short or hard posting where family can't followThe family moves in with relatives and the household goods stay in one place
You expect to come back to Delhi NCRYour furniture is already here when you return
The posting is likely to change again soonAvoid moving heavy furniture across the country twice in two years

The common thread is uncertainty. If you don't know how long you'll be away, or what space you'll have, a storage room keeps your choices open.

What should you store, and what should travel with you?

Take what you'll use every day at the new station. Store the rest, especially heavy or bulky items that are costly to move and hard to replace.

Usually storedUsually taken along
Large furniture: beds, sofas, dining set, almirahsClothes, bedding and a basic kitchen kit
Appliances that won't fit or aren't neededWork equipment, uniforms and professional books
Books, decor, crockery and keepsakesChildren's school things
Out-of-season clothing and extra beddingMedicines and medical records
Furniture for a future homeOriginals of service, property, insurance and identity documents

Appliances like fridges and washing machines can be stored if they're prepared properly. Our guide to storing a fridge, TV and washing machine walks through it. Check our storage rules too: flammables and gas cylinders aren't allowed, so return or hand over any gas cylinder before packing day.

How do you plan storage when you don't know the return date?

  • Go month to month. Transfer timelines change. A monthly plan lets you collect your goods whenever the next order comes, without a fixed term to work around.
  • Choose the city you'll come back to. If you expect to return to Delhi NCR, store close to where you'll live. We have rooms in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram.
  • Size it once. List your furniture and boxes in the storage calculator before you book.
  • Pack for a long stay. Everything clean and dry, wood polished, mattresses covered with breathable sheets, and heavy boxes at the bottom. Our furniture storage tips cover the detail.
  • Leave a walkway. If you or a family member may need something mid-posting, keep the boxes you might need near the door.

How do you manage stored goods from another city?

  • Keep a numbered inventory. Number every box, list what's inside, and photograph the room before you lock it. Keep a copy on your phone and one with a family member.
  • Name someone you trust nearby. A relative or friend in Delhi NCR can collect an item for you. Ask us how authorised access works before you leave.
  • Set up payment so it doesn't lapse. Postings in remote areas can mean patchy connectivity. Set a reminder or automatic payment so the room stays in good standing.
  • Keep addresses up to date. When your address changes, update it wherever it matters to you. For example, Aadhaar address updates are handled through UIDAI and passport services through Passport Seva.

How do you get goods into storage before you report?

Time is usually short, so split the move in two: what goes with you and what goes to storage. Pack and label them separately so movers don't mix them up. We can help arrange transport through our partners, so your goods come from your current home to the storage room on a date that fits around your relieving date. If you're using a mover for the long-distance leg, read our tips on choosing packers and movers.

On your return, the same works in reverse. Book transport, collect the room's contents, and move into your next home. If your next posting is abroad, our guide to long-term storage when relocating abroad has a few extra points.
