Clean and fully dry baby gear before storing it. Take cots apart and bag the screws, fold prams, keep the car seat manual with the seat, and box clothes by age. Self Storage India offers private, lockable rooms with 24/7 CCTV, regular pest control and monthly plans with no lock-in.
Prams, cots, high chairs and baby clothes take up a lot of room once a child outgrows them. If you're planning for another child, or keeping things for a relative, a storage unit can hold them until they're needed again. Here's how to clean, pack and store baby gear so it's ready to use.
Why should you clean baby gear before storing it?
Milk, food and sweat stains attract pests and leave smells. Clean every item and let it dry fully before packing. Damp fabric can develop mould in a closed box.
How should you pack each item?
| Item | How to store it |
|---|---|
| Pram or stroller | Clean, dry, fold and cover; keep wheels off cartons |
| Cot or crib | Take apart, bag the screws and tape the bag to a panel |
| Car seat | Clean, dry and keep the manual with it |
| High chair | Clean trays and straps; fold if it folds |
| Baby clothes | Wash, dry and pack in labelled boxes by age |
| Toys and books | Clean, dry and box by type |
| Bottles and feeding items | Clean and dry fully; replace before reuse if your doctor or the maker advises |
Is a stored car seat safe to reuse?
Check the maker's label and manual. Many car seats carry a use-by date or guidance on reuse. Keep the manual with the seat, and check it before the next child uses it.
How do you keep baby gear clean in storage?
- Wash and dry everything first.
- Use sealed cartons or bags for fabric items.
- Keep cartons off the floor and leave a gap from the walls.
- Label each box with contents and age range.
- Keep a list of what's stored. Use our inventory list template.

Which baby items are worth keeping?
Babies outgrow gear in months, and many families keep items for a second child, a relative or simply for sentimental reasons. Before storing anything, decide which group it falls into:
| Keep for a younger sibling or relative | Usually better passed on or replaced |
|---|---|
| Cot or crib frame in good condition | Mattresses that are stained or have lost their shape |
| Pram or stroller that folds and works smoothly | Car seats past the maker's expiry date or that have been in a crash |
| High chair, bouncer, play mat | Bottles, teats and pacifiers (hygiene items) |
| Baby carrier in good condition | Clothes with stains or worn elastic |
| Good-quality clothes in sizes you'll reuse | Toys with broken parts or loose small pieces |
| Keepsakes: first outfit, blanket, footprints | Opened creams, wipes and toiletries |
If you're keeping items for a future baby, write the date you packed them on each box. Safety standards and maker advice change over time, so check items again before reuse.
How should baby clothes be stored?
- Wash everything first. Milk and food stains that aren't visible now can show up as yellow marks later.
- Dry fully in shade. Any dampness can lead to mildew in storage.
- Sort by size. Pack clothes by age range in separate boxes or bags, and label each one, for example "0-3 months" or "6-12 months".
- Use breathable bags or clean cotton. Wrap special outfits in a clean cotton cloth rather than sealing them in plastic.
- Keep keepsakes separate. Put the first outfit, naming ceremony clothes or a hand-knitted sweater in their own labelled box.
How do you store big items like cots, prams and high chairs?
- Cots and cribs: take them apart following the maker's instructions, photograph the fittings, and bag the screws and bolts. Tape the bag to the largest panel. Wrap wooden panels in a blanket or pad.
- Prams and strollers: clean the fabric and wheels, dry fully, fold and cover with a breathable sheet. Remove any batteries from accessories.
- High chairs: wipe off food residue thoroughly, including straps and tray grooves, and dry fully.
- Swings and bouncers: remove batteries, wash removable covers, and keep small parts together in a labelled bag.
- Play mats and gyms: wash or wipe, dry, and fold loosely so foam isn't creased.
Keep heavy items on the floor of the unit on boards or a pallet, with lighter boxes on shelves.
Which items shouldn't go into storage?
- Opened formula, baby food, snacks or anything perishable.
- Creams, oils and toiletries, which can spoil and leak.
- Bottles, teats and pacifiers that you'd replace for a new baby anyway.
- Medicines, which need the conditions printed on their labels.
- Jewellery given at ceremonies, which is discouraged in storage. Keep it at home or in a bank locker.
How should you label and list baby gear?
When you open boxes months or years later, clear labels save a lot of time. Write on each box what it contains, the size or age range, the date it was packed and whether it's for reuse, passing on or keepsakes. Keep a simple list on your phone as well. Our storage inventory template works well for this.
When does storing baby gear make sense?
- You're planning another child in the next few years and want to keep the big items.
- Your flat is small and the nursery needs to become a study or playroom.
- You're moving and want to clear space before the move. See storage between rented flats.
- Grandparents or relatives may need the gear when they look after the baby.
If you only have a few boxes, box storage is priced per box.
What about toys and toddler items?
Baby gear and toys usually go into storage at the same time. See toy storage ideas for rotating toys and keeping them clean.
What are common mistakes when storing baby items?
- Packing clothes that haven't been washed, or aren't fully dry.
- Losing the screws for a cot because they weren't bagged and labelled.
- Storing items with food residue, which attracts pests.
- Leaving batteries in swings, monitors and toys.
- Keeping a car seat without noting its expiry date.
- Putting heavy boxes on top of a folded pram.

How do you get stored baby gear ready to use again?
- Unpack in a clean, dry room. Check each item against your list.
- Wash all fabric. Clothes, covers, mats and carrier fabric should be washed before a baby uses them, even if they were clean when packed.
- Check for damage. Look for cracks in plastic, loose joints in cots and high chairs, worn straps and buckles that don't click firmly.
- Check maker advice and recalls. Look up the model on the maker's website, especially for car seats, cots and prams.
- Reassemble with all parts. Use your photos and bagged hardware. Don't use a cot or high chair with missing screws.
- Fit new batteries in swings, monitors and toys.
- Air everything out for a day before use.
What if you're passing gear to relatives?
Many families hand baby gear down to cousins or friends. Clean and dry it, pack it with its manual and hardware, and include a note of the car seat's expiry date and anything that needs replacing. Store it labelled with the family's name if they'll collect it later.
