label Storage
Our storage calculator uses these starting ranges for a full home of furniture and cartons:
- 1BHK: about 45 to 68 sq ft
- 2BHK: about 72 to 98 sq ft
- 3BHK: about 98 to 125 sq ft
- 4BHK: 125 sq ft and up
Where you land in each range depends on what you own, not on the flat's carpet area. Count your big items first and the size follows.
"I have a 2BHK, what size do I need?" is the question we hear most. It's fair to ask. You don't want to pay for empty floor, and you really don't want to find on moving day that the sofa won't fit.
The honest answer is that two 2BHKs can need very different rooms. Below are the ranges we work from in Delhi, Gurugram and Noida, and how to work out where your home sits within them.
What size room fits a 1BHK, 2BHK or 3BHK?
| Home | Starting range (floor area) | Typically holds |
|---|---|---|
| 1BHK | 45–68 sq ft | One bed and mattress, a small sofa, fridge, washing machine, a wardrobe or two, cartons |
| 2BHK | 72–98 sq ft | Two beds, a sofa set, dining table and chairs, main appliances, wardrobes, cartons |
| 3BHK | 98–125 sq ft | Three beds, larger sofa and dining sets, extra wardrobes and storage units, more cartons |
| 4BHK or villa | 125 sq ft and up | A full large home; size it item by item |
These ranges come from our self storage calculator. They're a starting point. Use them to get a rough idea, then confirm with your own list. To see how room size feeds into the monthly bill, read what changes your self storage cost.
Why is it a range and not one number?
The flat's size only loosely predicts how much you own. A few things push you up or down:
- Wardrobes and beds. Freestanding wardrobes and box beds with storage take up a lot of room. Fitted wardrobes stay with the flat.
- Books, crockery and kitchen things. They add up to more cartons than people expect.
- Appliances. A double-door fridge, a front-loading washer and a large TV each need their own floor space.
- How long you've lived there. Five years in one flat usually means more cartons than one year does.
- Odd shapes. L-shaped sofas, swings and cycles don't stack, so they cost more floor than their size suggests.
How do you count what you own?
Go room by room and write down only the big things first. The cartons come later.
Bedrooms
- Beds (single, double, king) and whether they come apart
- Mattresses
- Freestanding wardrobes, dressers and side tables
Living and dining
- Sofas, recliners and centre tables
- Dining table and number of chairs
- TV units, shelves and showcases
Kitchen and utility
- Fridge, washing machine, microwave, water purifier
- Cartons of utensils and crockery
Everything else
- Cartons for clothes, books, decor and documents (estimate, then add a few)
- Suitcases, cycles, coolers, heaters, kids' things
Put that list into the calculator. If something isn't listed there, note its rough length, width and height and send it to us with the rest.
Does ceiling height change the size you need?
Yes. A room's floor area is only half the story. Cartons, mattresses on their side and upright items like wardrobes use height. A well-packed room puts heavy cartons at the bottom and lighter ones on top, with a narrow path down the middle so you can reach things. Our guides on placing items in self storage cover how to stack safely.
Leave some space too. A room packed to the last inch is hard to get into when you need one carton from the back.
What if you're only storing part of the home?
Plenty of people don't store everything. Common cases:
- Renovation of one or two rooms: size from the furniture in those rooms only.
- Moving in with family for a while: store the large furniture and keep clothes and daily items with you.
- Just cartons and suitcases: box storage may be enough, with no need for a full room.
Our private rooms start small, so a partial home doesn't have to go into a 2BHK-sized room.
What happens if you pick the wrong size?
| If the room is | What usually happens | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Too small | Items get left on the truck on moving day, or are stacked unsafely | List every large item, add a margin for cartons, and share the list before booking |
| Too big | You pay each month for floor you don't use | Declutter first and take apart beds and tables |
Decluttering before you size the room is the cheapest step of all. Our decluttering tips are a good place to start.

A full 1BHK usually starts at about 45 to 68 sq ft in our calculator. Fewer large items or dismantled beds can bring it down.

Yes. Size the room from only the items you're storing. For a few cartons and suitcases, box storage may be enough.
Yes. Cartons and upright items use the room's height, so a well-stacked room holds more than the floor area alone suggests. Keep a path so you can reach things.
