Keep everyday items at home and store what doesn't fit yet: spare gift appliances, unopened dinner sets, extra wedding outfits and furniture for a future bigger flat. Wrap outfits in cotton, label gifts with the giver and keep jewellery with you or in a bank locker. Self Storage India offers private, lockable rooms with 24/7 CCTV, regular pest control and monthly plans with no lock-in.

Many couples in Delhi NCR start married life in a smaller flat than either family home. Two sets of belongings, wedding gifts, trousseau and furniture from both sides arrive at once, often into a 1BHK or 2BHK with limited cupboard space. A storage unit can hold what doesn't fit yet, so the new home feels like a home rather than a godown, and you can decide calmly what to keep.

Why does space run out so fast after the wedding?

  • Two households merge. Each partner brings clothes, books, gadgets and kitchen items, and many are duplicates.
  • Wedding gifts arrive in bulk. Dinner sets, appliances, decor and cookware often come in multiples.
  • Trousseau and wedding outfits take a lot of cupboard space and need careful storage.
  • Furniture from family may be too large for a smaller flat but too precious to give away.
  • Rented flats may come furnished, leaving little room for your own pieces.

How do you decide what to keep at home?

Walk through the flat together before unpacking everything. Agree on what you'll use every week, and give that the space at home first. Then sort the rest:

ItemKeep at homeStoreGive away or return
Everyday clothes and shoesYes
Heavy wedding outfits and lehengasA few you'll wear soonThe rest, packed with care
Duplicate appliances (two mixers, two irons)One of eachThe spare, if you'll need it laterOr gift it to family
Gift dinner sets and cookwareOne set in useUnopened setsExact duplicates
Furniture that doesn't fitPieces for a future bigger flatPieces nobody wants
Books, hobby gear and memorabiliaFavouritesThe rest, boxed

Store only what you'll actually use in a future home. Paying to store items you'll never use isn't a saving.

How do you agree on this as a couple?

Sorting two lives into one flat can be a sensitive conversation, especially with gifts from both families. A few simple rules help:

  • Each partner chooses their own "must keep at home" items first, within an agreed amount of space.
  • Duplicates are decided together: keep the one in better condition or the one that fits the kitchen.
  • Family gifts can go into storage rather than being given away, so nobody feels a gift was rejected.
  • Set a review date, such as six months, to look at what's in storage again.

How do you store wedding outfits and trousseau?

Heavy silk, zari and embroidered outfits need clean, dry storage. Dry clean or air them before packing, wrap each one in clean, undyed cotton, and keep folds to a minimum. Don't seal them in plastic for long periods. Add a cotton pouch of neem leaves or cedar to deter moths, and check them every few months. Our guides to storing silk sarees and lehengas and storing wedding items go into detail.

Jewellery and cash are better kept with you or in a bank locker than in a storage unit.

How should you pack unused gifts?

  • Keep appliances and crockery in their original boxes where possible; they're designed to protect the contents.
  • Write the item and who gave it on the outside of each box. It helps with thank-you notes and later decisions.
  • Pack crockery and glassware with paper between pieces. See how to pack crockery for storage.
  • Note any warranty dates. A warranty can run out while an appliance sits in its box, so register it now.

What about furniture from either family?

A large almirah, a dining set or a double bed from a parent's home may not fit a new flat. Take apart what can be safely taken apart, wrap wood in blankets or pads, and keep it off the floor in storage. Wooden furniture needs protection from termites and damp; read our termite prevention guide and dining table storage tips.

What shouldn't go into storage after a wedding?

Weddings leave behind a lot of food gifts: boxes of mithai, dry fruits and packed snacks. Food and perishables can't be stored, as they attract pests, so share or use them up. Leave out anything flammable, including diyas with oil, camphor, incense and leftover decorative candles. Jewellery, cash and important papers such as your marriage certificate are better kept with you. See what can and cannot be stored and our guide to storing personal papers.

How much storage space will you need?

It depends on what you store. A few boxes of gifts and clothes need far less space than a set of furniture. List what's going in, then use the storage calculator to estimate the room size. If it's only a handful of boxes, box storage priced per box may suit you better than a room. Our guide to storage unit sizes for 1BHK, 2BHK and 3BHK homes also helps.

How can you make a small flat work better day to day?

  • Use the space under the bed for out-of-season clothes in breathable bags.
  • Add hooks and shelves on walls and behind doors.
  • Keep the kitchen to one set of everyday crockery and cookware.
  • Rotate seasonal items: summer clothes and coolers out, winter clothes and heaters in. See storing an AC, cooler and heater off-season.

How do you plan moving day into the new flat?

When belongings come from two homes, it helps to plan moving day as two separate trips: one to the new flat with only what you'll use there, and one to storage with everything else. Sort and label boxes at each parent's home first, marking them "Flat" or "Storage". This avoids carrying boxes up to a small flat only to move them out again a week later.

Measure doorways, the lift and the bedroom before moving large furniture. A bed or almirah that fit easily in a family bungalow may not turn the corner of a narrow staircase. If a piece won't fit, send it straight to storage. Check your society's rules on moving hours and lift booking, as many Delhi NCR societies set fixed times for moves.

How do you keep storage costs in check?

Storage costs depend mainly on the space you use and how long you use it. Sorting carefully before you store is the simplest way to keep the bill small: every duplicate you give away is space you don't pay for. Pack boxes of the same size so they stack neatly, and use the height of the room. Review what's in storage every few months. Once you've settled into the flat, you may find you can move some items home or give them away and switch to a smaller space. Read what changes your monthly storage cost for more.

What happens when you move to a bigger home?

Many couples use storage as a bridge until they move to a larger flat or into their own home. Keep an inventory with photos so you know what's waiting, and plan the move-out in one trip if you can. Monthly plans with no lock-in mean you can end storage when you no longer need it. If you've bought a flat that isn't ready yet, see storage during a possession delay.
