Packed cartons ready for storage between two rented flats in Gurugram label Move
lightbulb Short Answer
  • If your old lease ends before the new flat is ready, put the bulk of your furniture and cartons into a private storage room on a month-to-month plan, and carry only two or three weeks of essentials with you.
  • Size the room from your inventory, not a guess. Our storage calculator gives you a starting figure in a few minutes.
  • Do the paperwork on both flats before moving day: photos for the deposit, the new flat's handover date in writing, and society move-in rules.
  • Pack for storage, not just transport. Clean, dry items, sturdy cartons, and a labelled list will save you a lot of digging later.

Most people renting in Gurugram have been here at least once. The current lease runs out on the 30th. The new flat won't be free until the 12th, or the owner still has painting to finish, or the society wants a move-in slot booked a week ahead. For those days, a whole home's worth of furniture has nowhere to go.

This guide covers how to handle that gap without paying for two rents or piling everything into a friend's spare room. It's written for tenants moving within Gurugram, or between Gurugram, Delhi and Noida.

Why do the dates on two leases rarely line up?

The dates on two rental agreements almost never line up neatly. A few common reasons:

  • Notice periods don't match. Your current agreement may need one or two months' notice, while the new owner wants you to sign and pay rent from a fixed date.
  • The new flat isn't ready. Repainting, deep cleaning, repairs, or the previous tenant leaving late can all push the handover back.
  • Society rules. Many gated societies only allow moving trucks on certain days or at certain hours and ask for prior intimation to the maintenance office. Ask your society what applies.
  • You're between cities or jobs. A transfer or a short stint elsewhere can leave you with no address for a month or two.

Paying rent on both flats for the overlap is one fix. Storing your things and staying light for a few weeks is often cheaper. Which one wins depends on the length of the gap and what you're paying in rent, so work it out with your own numbers.

What should go into storage and what should stay with you?

The idea is simple. Anything you won't touch until you're in the new flat goes into storage. Daily needs travel with you.

Put into storageKeep with you
Beds, mattresses, sofas, dining sets, wardrobesClothes for two to three weeks, including office wear
Fridge, washing machine, microwave (cleaned and dry)Laptop, chargers, work equipment
Kitchen cartons you won't need for a whileMedicines and prescriptions
Books, decor, off-season clothes and beddingID, rental agreements, bank and school papers
Cycles, suitcases you aren't using, kids' bulky toysJewellery, cash and other valuables

Don't store food, plants, anything flammable such as gas cylinders or paint thinner, or anything wet. Check the provider's list of prohibited items before you pack.

What does a move-out to move-in timeline look like?

Three to four weeks before

  • Get the new flat's handover date in writing, on WhatsApp or email at the very least.
  • Give notice on the current flat as your agreement requires.
  • Make a rough room-by-room list of what you own and run it through the self storage calculator.
  • Book the storage room and the movers. Weekends at the end of the month fill up fast.
  • Start decluttering. Whatever you sell or donate now, you won't pay to move or store. Our decluttering tips help here.

The last week

  • Book the lift or moving slot with both societies, if they need one.
  • Defrost and dry the fridge at least a day before. Drain the washing machine.
  • Pack a "gap bag" for each person with everything you'll need until move-in.
  • Number your cartons and keep a simple list of what's in each one.

Moving day

  • Take dated photos and video of every room in the old flat once it's empty.
  • Note meter readings and hand over keys against a written acknowledgment.
  • At the storage room, put the things you'll want first near the door.

Move-in day

  • Photograph the new flat before your things come in, so you have a record of its condition.
  • Bring everything over in one trip if you can. It's usually cheaper than paying for two truck runs.

How much storage space will you need?

Storage rooms are measured by floor area, but height matters too. A well-packed room uses the vertical space, with heavy cartons at the bottom and lighter ones on top. Our private rooms range from about 20 sq ft to more than 300 sq ft. For a handful of cartons, box storage may be enough and you won't need a whole room.

Every home is different, so don't decide on the size of the flat alone. A 2BHK with a lot of books and two wardrobes needs more space than a sparsely furnished 3BHK. Make the list, use the calculator, and if you're unsure, call us with the list and we'll suggest a size.

How should you pack for a few weeks or months in storage?

Handover delays tend to stretch. Pack as though the gap could run a month longer than planned.

  • Clean and dry everything. Damp clothes or a fridge with water inside can grow mould in a closed room, more so during the monsoon.
  • Use sturdy cartons of similar sizes so they stack well. Our guide to wrapping and packing materials covers what to buy.
  • Wrap fragile items properly. See packing fragile items for storage.
  • Take beds and tables apart where you can. Tape the screws into a labelled bag on the frame.
  • Cover mattresses and sofas with breathable covers or sheets rather than sealing them tight in plastic.
  • Label two sides of each carton, not just the top. The top is the first thing that disappears in a stack.

Our guide to arranging items in a storage unit explains how to lay out the room so you can still get at things in the middle of the gap.

How do you protect the deposit on the old flat?

An empty flat is the easiest time to show its condition. Before you hand over the keys:

  • Take dated photos of walls, floors, fittings, and any damage that was there when you moved in.
  • Get pending bills and the maintenance balance cleared or settled in writing.
  • Agree the deposit refund date and any deductions in a message, not just verbally.
  • Keep your rental agreement and payment records with you, not in a storage carton.

Once your furniture is out, a painter or cleaner can work in the old flat without anything in the way. If the owner wants touch-ups before refunding the deposit, that helps.

What should you ask a storage provider?

AskWhy it matters for a short gap
Is the plan month to month? You don't want to be tied into a long term if the new flat is ready early.
Is the room private and lockable?Your things stay separate from anyone else's.
What security is on site?Ask about CCTV, guards and access control.
Can you arrange pickup and packing? One truck from the old flat straight to storage saves a trip.
How do I get things out midway? You may need a winter jacket or a document mid-gap.
What's included in the price, and what isn't?Get transport, packing and storage quoted separately so you can compare.
