Store bulk fabric, past samples, trims, mannequins and exhibition kits in a nearby room, and keep fabric for current orders at the studio. Make sure fabric is dry, wrap it in breathable covers, add silica gel and label boxes with swatches. Self Storage India offers private, lockable rooms with 24/7 CCTV, regular pest control, monthly plans with no lock-in and a GST invoice for business customers.

Boutiques and fashion designers in Delhi NCR collect fabric faster than they use it. Bolts bought in bulk for a good price, samples from past collections, trims, embellishments, mannequins and display props all compete for space in a studio that also has to work as a cutting room, fitting room and shop. A nearby storage room can hold the slow-moving stock while the studio stays usable. This guide covers how to prepare fabric and samples for storage, how to protect them from damp and insects, and how to find things quickly when an order comes in.

Why do boutiques run out of space?

  • Bulk fabric buying. Buying a full roll is cheaper per metre, but most of it waits for future orders.
  • Past collections. Samples and unsold pieces from earlier seasons are worth keeping for reference, resale or exhibitions.
  • Trims and embellishments. Laces, borders, buttons, beads and threads multiply quickly.
  • Props and display. Mannequins, dress forms, racks and exhibition material are used only some of the time.
  • Studio moves. Everything needs a home while you move or refit.

How should you prepare fabric for storage?

  1. Make sure it's dry. Fabric that feels even slightly damp can grow mould in a closed room. Air rolls and folded pieces before packing, especially in the monsoon.
  2. Clean samples first. Stains, sweat and perfume on worn samples set over time and attract insects. Clean or wash them as the fabric allows.
  3. Roll rather than fold where you can. Rolling avoids hard creases, which can become permanent in silk, velvet and fine cotton.
  4. Use breathable wrapping. Cotton sheets, muslin or acid-free tissue let fabric breathe. Plastic alone traps moisture.
  5. Keep fabric off the floor. Use shelves, pallets or sturdy boxes to keep it away from any damp.
  6. Add moisture absorbers. Silica gel packs in boxes help in Delhi NCR's humid months.

How should silk, zari and embroidered pieces be stored?

Delicate and heavily worked fabrics need extra care. Wrap silk and zari pieces in soft cotton or muslin, with acid-free tissue between folds so metallic thread doesn't press into the fabric. Refold them every few months along different lines so creases don't weaken the fibres. Store heavy embroidered or beaded garments flat, because hanging them can stretch the fabric under the weight. Keep them away from rough wooden surfaces and anything that might snag. Our guide to storing silk sarees and lehengas goes into detail on traditional fabrics, and many of the same steps apply to designer samples.

How do you protect fabric from moths and silverfish?

Wool, silk and natural fibres can attract moths, and paper patterns and cardboard can attract silverfish. Clean fabric before storage, since food traces and body oils draw insects in. Use sealed but breathable boxes, and avoid cardboard cartons that have been sitting in a damp godown. Avoid chemical repellents, which can stain fabric and are not allowed in storage. Check stored fabric every few months, especially after the monsoon. The facility has regular pest control, and our monsoon storage tips help with damp.

How do you organise fabric so you can find it?

A storage room only saves time if you can find the right fabric quickly. Group rolls by fabric type, such as cotton, silk, georgette and linen, and then by colour. Give each box or shelf a code and keep a sheet that lists the code, fabric, colour, length remaining and supplier. Pin or tape a small swatch to the outside of each box, so staff can match a client's choice without opening everything. Keep samples from each collection together, labelled with the season and year. See how to lay out a storage unit for ideas on shelving and walkways.

How do you keep a stock register?

Fabric and samples are business stock, so keep a simple register: item, quantity or length, date stored, location in the room and any notes on condition. Update it whenever you take fabric out for an order, so you always know how much is left. Photos of samples help when a client asks for a repeat of an old design. Our inventory guide shows a format you can use. Insurance for stored goods can be facilitated via partners; read how storage insurance works.

How does storage help with exhibitions and pop-ups?

Many designers sell at exhibitions, pop-ups and wedding fairs across Delhi NCR. Keep a packed exhibition kit in storage: folding racks, hangers, a mannequin, signage, display cloth, tags and packing material. Keep a list inside the kit and check it when it comes back. Before each show, pull the stock you plan to sell and add it to the kit. That way you can be ready in one trip, without stripping the studio.

How should mannequins and racks be moved?

Dress forms and mannequins break easily at the neck, arms and stand. Remove detachable arms and heads, wrap them separately and label them so they go back on the right body. Cover each figure with a dust sheet. Take garment racks apart if they allow it, and tie the pieces together. Partner pickup, packing and transport are available across Delhi NCR at an additional cost; read how pickup works.

How often should you review stored stock?

Fabric that sits too long can fade, yellow along folds or simply fall out of fashion. Set a review every season: check condition, refold delicate pieces, note what has been used and decide what to keep. Slow-moving fabric can be turned into a sample line, sold to other designers or used for alterations and small accessories. Clearing old stock keeps the room tidy and stops you paying to store fabric you will never use.

How do staff access stored stock?

You lock the room with your own padlock and keep the only key, so decide who holds it and who can visit. Confirm the facility's operating hours with the team before planning a pickup around a client fitting or an exhibition. Read how access hours and visits work and security questions for businesses.

How does billing work for a boutique?

Costs depend mainly on the space you use and how long you use it. Monthly plans have no lock-in, which suits stock that moves with the seasons. Business customers can get a GST invoice. Use the storage calculator to estimate space, and read how business storage is billed and choosing a unit size for business use.
