Before you rent a storage room, it helps to know how visits work: when you can come in, who can come with you, what to bring and how to get the most out of each trip. Access matters most if you'll visit often, such as a shop owner collecting stock or a family swapping seasonal clothes. This guide explains how access works at Self Storage India and what to ask before you book.
How does access to your storage room work?
Your room is private. You lock it with your own padlock and keep the key, so nobody else opens it in the normal course. You can visit your room during the facility's operating hours whenever you need to add or take out items. Operating hours can differ between facilities and on holidays, so confirm the current hours with the team for the facility you choose, in Noida, Delhi or Gurugram.
What should you ask about access before booking?
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What are the operating hours, including Sundays and holidays? | So you can plan visits around work |
| Do I need to inform the team before a visit? | Some visits go faster when the team knows you're coming |
| Can someone else visit on my behalf? | Useful if you travel or live abroad |
| Is there parking or space to load a vehicle? | Important for furniture or stock runs |
| Is help or a trolley available for moving goods to the room? | Saves time on heavy visits |
| How do I add a second authorised person? | For family members or staff |
Write the answers down, or ask for them on WhatsApp or email, so you have them for later.
Can family members or staff visit for you?
Many customers need someone else to visit, for example a parent while you're working abroad, or a store manager collecting stock. Ask the team how to authorise another person and what ID they need to bring. Give that person a copy of your inventory and make sure they have access to the padlock key. For long stays abroad, our guide on storage when relocating abroad covers how to set this up. Businesses can read security and access questions for businesses.
How often do people usually visit?
| Use | Typical pattern | Layout tip |
|---|---|---|
| Household goods during a move | Once in, once out | Pack the room tightly |
| Seasonal items | A few times a year | Keep seasonal boxes near the door |
| Shop or e-commerce stock | Weekly or more | Shelves and a clear walkway |
| Documents and archives | Occasionally | Numbered boxes and an index |
| Hobby or sports gear | Before and after the season | Group gear by activity |
How do you plan a visit so it's quick?
- Check your inventory to see which box or shelf holds what you need.
- Confirm the operating hours for that day, especially on holidays.
- Bring your padlock key and ID.
- Bring what you need to move goods: tape, a marker, spare boxes, or a helper for heavy items.
- Update your inventory before you leave, with what came out and what went in.
A good layout makes every visit shorter. Keep a walkway, put the things you need often near the door and label boxes on two sides. See how to lay out a storage unit and our inventory guide.
What should you expect on your first visit?
The first visit is usually move-in day. Bring your ID, your booking details and your padlock if you're using your own. Ask the team to show you the route from the parking or loading point to your room, where trolleys are kept if there are any, and how to reach them during later visits. Note the operating hours and the team's contact number on your phone. Before you start unloading, look at the room and plan where heavy items, boxes and things you'll need often will go. It is much harder to rearrange a full room later.
Should you visit just to check on your goods?
For long stays, an occasional check visit is worth the trip, especially before and after the monsoon. Look for signs of damp on boxes near the floor, check that wrapped furniture is still covered and that nothing has shifted or fallen. Swap out silica gel packs if they have changed colour or feel heavy. If you live abroad, ask your authorised family member to do this and send you photos. Our monsoon storage tips explain what to look for.
What if you lose your padlock key?
Because you keep the only key, look after it. Keep a spare in a safe place at home, and give one to the person you've authorised if you're away. If you lose both, contact the team before your visit and ask how they handle it. Don't try to force the lock yourself.
How does access fit with security?
Access and security go together. Your room is private and lockable, and the facility has 24/7 CCTV. Keeping your own key means only people you choose can open your room. In return, it's on you to keep the key safe and keep your authorised list up to date. Valuables such as jewellery and cash are better kept with you or in a bank locker rather than in storage.
What should businesses think about?
If staff visit for stock, write down who can visit and how they record what they take. A simple register at the room, or a shared sheet, keeps your stock count accurate. Plan visits so they don't all land at the busiest times of day. For stock-based businesses, see shop stock storage and how business storage is billed. Business customers can get a GST invoice.
Do you have to visit at all?
Not always. If you'd rather not move goods yourself, partner pickup, packing and transport are available across Delhi NCR at an additional cost. This is useful for moving goods in at the start or out at the end. Read how to plan a storage pickup.
What happens on your last visit?
When you end your plan, the last visit is about clearing the room fully. Check your plan's notice period first and give notice in time. Book transport or a pickup for the day, and bring enough help to move everything in one trip if you can. Check every corner and shelf against your inventory so nothing is left behind, sweep out any packing waste, and ask the team what they need from you to close the room. Read how monthly plans work for more on ending a plan.
Does the facility's location matter for access?
Yes, especially if you'll visit often. A facility close to your home or shop saves travel time on every visit. The Gurugram facility is near Hero Honda Chowk on NH-48, the Noida facility is in Sector 59, and the Delhi facility is in Sector 28, Dwarka. Visits to see a facility before you book can be arranged. Pick the one that's quickest to reach at the times you'll usually go, keeping traffic in mind.
