These corridors have a mix of high-rise societies, independent floors and villas, with many residents renting and moving every few years. Storage tends to come up at the same moments:
| Situation | What usually goes into storage |
|---|---|
| Moving between rented flats | Most of the household for a few weeks, while the new lease starts or the flat is painted |
| Waiting for possession of a new flat | Furniture and boxes for months, sometimes longer than planned |
| Renovation or waterproofing | Furniture and belongings from the rooms being worked on |
| Downsizing from a villa to a flat | Furniture that doesn't fit yet, while you decide what to keep |
| Posting or assignment abroad | Household goods kept safe until you return |
| Family moving in | Spare furniture making room for parents or relatives |

How do you work out how much space you need?
The easiest way is to list what you plan to store, room by room, and use the storage calculator. A few tips make the estimate more accurate:
- List big items first. Beds, sofas, wardrobes, dining sets, fridges and washing machines take up most of the space.
- Count boxes realistically. Kitchens, books and clothes usually need more boxes than people expect.
- Take apart what you can. Bed frames, tables and some wardrobes take far less space when dismantled. See storing a dining table.
- Decide what you'll need to reach. Items you'll want during the storage period should go near the front.
- Ask for a quote. Click "Get Free Quote" and the team can help you match a unit to your list.
How do you plan a move-out from a gated society?
Most societies along these roads have rules for moving furniture in and out. Checking them early avoids delays on the day.
- Ask the facility office about move-out rules. Many societies need advance notice, a gate pass or a no-dues certificate.
- Check lift booking. Service lifts may need to be booked for a time slot, and some societies restrict moves to certain hours.
- Protect common areas. Lifts and corridors are sometimes padded for moves; ask whether this is your job or the mover's.
- Plan parking for the truck. Check where a truck can wait and for how long.
- Keep essentials separate. Pack a bag with documents, medicines, chargers and a few days' clothes, and keep it with you.
Partner pickup, packing and transport are available across Delhi NCR at an additional cost. See how pickup works.
How should you pack for a Gurugram summer and monsoon?
Gurugram's summers are hot and the monsoon brings high humidity. Packing well protects your belongings through both:
- Clean and dry everything before it's packed, especially fridges, washing machines and mattresses. See storing a fridge, TV and washing machine and how to store a mattress.
- Use breathable covers next to wood and fabric, with plastic only as an outer layer.
- Keep boxes and furniture off the floor and away from walls.
- Seal boxes well and label every side.
- Read our monsoon storage tips before the rains.
What should you ask before choosing a storage facility?
- Is the room private and lockable, and who holds the key?
- What security is in place, such as CCTV and access logging?
- How often is pest control carried out?
- Is there a lock-in period or minimum term?
- What items aren't allowed?
- How do access and visits work?
- Can the facility arrange pickup, and what does it cost?
For a longer list, see questions to ask a storage facility about security.
What should you store and what should you keep with you?
| Usually stored | Usually kept with you |
|---|---|
| Furniture you won't need for a while | Passports, property papers and other documents |
| Seasonal clothes, quilts and blankets | Jewellery, cash and priceless items (discouraged in storage) |
| Appliances, cleaned and dried | Medicines and daily essentials |
| Books, toys and hobby gear | Laptops and work equipment you use every day |
| Festival decor and utensils for occasions | Food, plants and anything perishable (not allowed) |
| Sports and trekking kit | Gas cylinders and flammables (not allowed) |
How do you plan for longer-term storage?
Possession delays and overseas postings can stretch storage from months to more than a year. A few steps help:
- Write an inventory. Use our storage inventory template and keep a copy on your phone.
- Photograph valuable furniture before it's wrapped.
- Protect wood from termites and damp. See termite prevention for stored furniture.
- Review every few months. Monthly plans with no lock-in let you change what you store as plans change.
- Ask about insurance. Self Storage India can facilitate insurance coverage options through its insurance partners. See storage insurance in India.
Waiting on a new flat? See storage during a possession delay; the planning steps apply in Gurugram too.
What's different when you move out of a villa or independent floor?
Larger homes along Golf Course Road and the Sohna Road belt often have more furniture, outdoor items and staff quarters to clear. Planning ahead helps:
- Walk through every room, terrace and store room and list what goes into storage, what moves with you and what you'll sell or donate.
- Plan for heavy pieces. Marble-topped tables, large wardrobes and pianos may need extra people or specialist handling. Ask about this when you request pickup.
- Clean garden and terrace furniture and dry it fully. Remove soil from planters; plants and soil can't go into storage.
- Empty and dry water tanks, coolers and washing machines before moving them.
- Collect manuals, remotes and spare keys in one labelled box.
- Allow more than one day for packing a larger home, and pack rooms you use least first.
Our guide to storage unit size by home size can help you think through the space a larger household might need.
What can't you store?
